The town of Silverton, Colorado

For lunch we stopped in the town of Silverton which is between Durango and Ouray.

Here Rick was going to meet Gareth who is a friend of Rick's brother. Gareth and his wife Linda have been living in Silverton for 13 years and own a weaving store in town. They also own a very interesting house that is made of 2 feet concrete walls. It looks and feels like a bunker. Temperature was about 60F whereas outside temperature was on the 70+F.

We learned that the whole county has about 600 people (I imagine the town has less than 300), they have one paved street and receive 4 trains a day with about 300-400 tourists per train making that over 1,200 tourists per day (4x town population). So you would expect the twin to cater for tourists and they do. The town is surrounded by mountains and when I asked it they have a ski resort they seem to have one of the most difficult black runs around and it is where supposedly Shaun White trains.

Gareth kept referring to their lifestyle as pioneers and clearly this town is not for the weak at heart during the winter months.

But it was very pleasant to us on a beautiful sunny afternoon and we thoroughly enjoyed our visit and bought a sticker to put on the bike.
